WO1 OER Writing Guide

The WO1 OER evaluates a warrant officer's first assignment as a technical expert and leader. Unlike commissioned officers who lead formations, warrant officers are specialists — evaluators focus on technical competence, advisory capacity, and ability to manage systems and processes within their MOS.

Typical duties:

Technical expert and advisor to the commander on MOS-specific systems and operations

Manages and maintains critical equipment, systems, or programs within area of expertise

Trains and mentors Soldiers and NCOs on technical procedures and standards

Conducts inspections and ensures compliance with technical manuals and regulations

Serves as the unit subject matter expert for maintenance, logistics, intelligence, or aviation operations

Troubleshoots complex technical problems that exceed NCO-level knowledge

Example bullets:

o served as the unit’s technical advisor on a fielding of new communications equipment, training 60 Soldiers ahead of schedule

o diagnosed a recurring maintenance fault that three previous technicians had missed, restoring the system to full readiness

o developed a technical smartbook for a complex weapons system that became the company’s standard reference

o inspected and certified 15 pieces of equipment for compliance with technical manuals ahead of an external inspection

o troubleshot a signal outage during a field exercise that exceeded NCO-level diagnostic capability, restoring communications within an hour
