SSG NCOER Writing Guide

The SSG NCOER evaluates squad leaders and senior section leaders. At this level, evaluators expect to see broader leadership impact — managing multiple teams, developing SGTs, and contributing to platoon-level operations.

Typical duties:

Squad leader responsible for 8-12 Soldiers across multiple teams

Plans and executes squad-level training aligned with platoon METL

Manages equipment accountability and maintenance for squad assets

Develops team leaders and conducts formal counseling sessions

Serves as subject matter expert for MOS-specific tasks and procedures

Coordinates with platoon leadership on operational planning and execution

Example bullets:

o led a 10-Soldier squad through a battalion field training exercise, completing all assigned lanes with a 95% go rate

o developed two team leaders who both earned squad leader positions within the rating period

o managed accountability for $340K in squad equipment with zero losses during a change-of-command inventory

o planned and executed monthly sergeant’s time training that raised the squad’s weapons qualification rate to 100%

o served as the platoon’s subject matter expert on the new digital fires system, training 24 Soldiers ahead of fielding

o coordinated with two adjacent squad leaders to synchronize a joint live-fire exercise without a safety incident

o counseled a struggling specialist through a security clearance issue, helping him retain his position

o completed the Advanced Leader Course as the distinguished honor graduate
