SGT NCOER Writing Guide

The SGT NCOER is often a Soldier's first evaluation as an NCO. It covers team leader and squad-level duties, focusing on how the new NCO develops subordinates, enforces standards, and leads small-unit operations.

Typical duties:

Team leader responsible for training, welfare, and accountability of 3-5 Soldiers

Conducts pre-combat inspections and maintains team equipment readiness

Leads physical training sessions and ensures Soldiers meet ACFT standards

Mentors junior Soldiers on career development and professional growth

Enforces discipline and adherence to Army standards and regulations

Conducts individual and collective training per unit METL tasks

Example bullets:

o led a four-Soldier team through 10 days of situational training exercises, achieving a 90% first-time go rate on all lanes

o mentored two privates through initial military training standards, both meeting height/weight and ACFT requirements ahead of the suspense

o conducted pre-combat inspections before every mission during a 30-day field problem, catching three equipment deficiencies before they became mission failures

o enforced barracks standards for the team, maintaining zero health and welfare inspection findings for two consecutive cycles

o completed the Basic Leader Course, graduating in the top third of the class
