MSG/1SG NCOER Writing Guide
The MSG/1SG NCOER evaluates the most senior enlisted leaders in company and battalion positions. At this level, evaluators expect strategic thinking, significant organizational impact, and the ability to shape policy and develop the NCO corps.
Typical duties:
First Sergeant responsible for welfare, discipline, and readiness of 100-200 Soldiers
Principal advisor to the company commander on all enlisted and NCO matters
Manages company-level training programs and professional development
Oversees property accountability for millions of dollars in equipment
Coordinates with battalion staff on operational planning and personnel actions
Serves on promotion and award boards at battalion and brigade level
Example bullets:
o managed welfare, discipline, and readiness for 160 Soldiers during a full training year with zero preventable safety incidents
o advised the company commander on a reorganization of squad manning that closed a critical MOS gap
o oversaw a $14M property book across the company with zero losses at the annual command supply discipline inspection
o coordinated with battalion staff on a personnel action backlog, clearing 40 pending actions in three weeks
o served on the battalion promotion board, evaluating 18 candidates for E-6 and E-7
o built a company mentorship program that raised the NCO Education System completion rate to 100%
o managed the company’s health and welfare program, reducing behavioral health no-show appointments by half
o developed two platoon sergeants who went on to be selected for first sergeant positions
